SPEAK, YOU ALSO
Speak - But keep yes and no unsplit.
And give your say this meaning:
Give it the shade.
Speak, You also,
Speak as the last,
Have your say.
- Paul Celan
This series looks at the unfamiliar – the uncanny – which can be created through minimalist performance. An abstraction of locations that may appear in nearly all urban environments, which I then position a minimalist performance in; undertaken through the static figures presence transforming the space into strange, yet hauntingly familiar settings for the viewer.
The audience is presented with reality in a new light, through a staged performance between location, photographer and my chosen incorporated subjects. The project comments on reality testing. The ‘between reality’ that causes intellectual uncertainty for the viewer who wants to both reject and rationalise the uncanny experience. As a subject explored it is an indefinite definition in itself. These images simultaneously reveal and conceal these dreamlike scenes, accenting the incompleteness of each ‘happening.’
