Jannica Honey was born in Stockholm of a Swedish mother and Armenian father. After completing a degree in Humanities (majoring in Anthropology) at Stockholm University, Jannica moved to Edinburgh and began studying Photography.
In 2003, having completed an HND in Photography and Digital Imaging, Jannica scooped several awards including the Fuji Award for Fashion Photography and Creative Photographer of the Year.
The collection of photographs here demonstrates a photographer whose repertoire encapsulates a compendium of human emotion. Jannica’s work is certainly visually stimulating, but the real draw is that it captures a tenderness and rawness that few other images achieve.
Jannica’s work is often erotic yet flirts so close to the line of acceptance that you can never fully relax. Her images often twin sensual content with other, uncomfortable sentiment – a writhing, suspended kitten or a drawling dog.
“I often shoot from a subconscious level and the final images have layers of different translations. I noticed that a lot of images in my last exhibition - STHLM ‘Go Away to Come Home’ - were shot from a child’s perspective and with a child’s curiosity.”
This infantile edge to the work ensures it asks more questions than it answers: “My aim is to try to shoot people as they are. My goal is to connect with what is within the subject, sometimes you can see the soul bearing itself for a moment and that is what I am ultimately looking for.”
Next month Jannica will be shooting the 13 hours performance of ‘The Darktown Cakewalk: Celebrated from the House of Fame’ at the Chisenhal Gallery.
