Pascal Fellonneau is a French photographer from Bordeaux. He is without any specific art-based education we asked him how this came to be:

“As a teenager I was spending most of my time drawing and painting. When I was 16, one of my friends bought a cheap camera and we started to take pictures with it. To have our negatives developed and our images printed, we asked the person in charge of artistic projects in our high school to allocate us funds to set up a B&W lab, he agreed. That's how it [all] started.”

The collection of photos on display here show building sites in various stages of completion. The beauty of the final architectural element is contrasted to the crudeness of the materials that are needed to make them.

Pascal is careful to incorporate the natural world into his photos, whether in the reflection of windows, or tape simply stretched across a tree. The trees and foliage almost seem to replace the human element you would expect to see in these images, which gives them a haunting, lost element. In fact the deliberate exclusion of any human is intensified by explicitly showing traces that they were there. These images are questioning the viewer and exude a sense of loneliness. Where has everyone gone? Why have they left us here?

Pascal's work is a quiet observation. You can imagine the photographer flitting from building to building, unnoticed and leaving no trace that he had ever been there at all. A silent documenter whose landscapes would usually resonate with noise.

So what has Pascal got planned for the rest of 2010?

“[I] think I’m going to follow different personal projects such as "Municipal slaughterhouse prostitution area", a series about the

rehabilitation of the old slaughterhouse area in Bordeaux but also a series on urban flora. In October I should start the first part of an artist residency near Saint-Malo (Brittany, France) [and] until then I will work on assignments for the regional edition of ELLE magazine in Bordeaux and for other regular clients.”
