Drifting Through Paris
Fallyrag

A couple of months ago Rachel Dink made a submission to Fallyrag consisting of a selection of photographs taken in China. Her opportunistic style and anticipation created some immediate and charming shots. Fast forward 2 months and Rachel has been travelling again. This time Fallyrag received a batch of photographs from Paris and such had the talent of the photography grown that we've decided to show these instead!

It's humbling to watch a photographer with enthusiasm match that with genuine talent and it's happened before our very eyes. Rachel's China shots had a charm of a photographer looking at the world for the first time. The collection here shows that  the charm still remains but the compositional qualities have evolved. Rachel has raised her technical game to produce her trademark street-wit images with a professional execution.

It is this growing development that we asked Rachel about and her answers were as frank and honest as her photographs.

"I went to Paris alone for a week on a whim; after quitting my high paying, yet highly stressful job, supervising group homes for adults with developmental disabilities. Part of me went with the intention of taking really beautiful pictures. Part of me went to experience how people live. Another part of me wanted to practice my five years of French. But mostly I went as a sanity break for myself," Rachel explained.

"There is something about being a stranger in a strange place that gives you permission to take photos of somebody's dog on a chair outside of their stall at the flea market, just because you admire the look of it."

We asked Rachel about the development in her work. "My work has changed. It must have, considering how much I've changed this year. I'd like to think I'm slowing down and noticing things around me more (both in

photography and life) but I'm not sure how true that is."

Rachel goes on to elaborate on the Jeu de Paume's exhibition on Lisette Model, which she describes as "people going about their daily lives…looking so flawed and so human and so much like myself and people I know."
