Ruby Dhalay is an urban photographer who for three years has been lost in the quaint backdrop of Cornwall. Developing a quirky eye for dead-pan pictures, Dhalay presents the South-West with humour and intrigue.
Most of her current work is executed by budget disposable cameras – a medium she feels can begin to bridge the gap between professional photographers and the snap-happy tourist. “I love the democracy of the medium; an audience with a little of no photography background can easily identify with using one which is important to me as it brings me to the same level as them and indeed my subject.”
The aesthetic quality of using such a medium is key to Dhalay’s quest for timeless images. The grainy colour quality of the economy, fast ISO film and the blurred, vignetted edges from the wide-angle plastic lens, all contribute to a photograph taken by the ‘everyman’. Ruby Dhalay’s unique ability at finding humour in the ordinary and mundane is winning her critical acclaim.
