Reality and Fiction

Samuli Blatter currently studies Illustration at the Lucerne School of Art, Switzerland. Samuli creates his work from within the ‘being of the artist‘ i.e. he uses his natural experience to create the paths by which he travels in his illustration. His words today are in reflection of his method:

“Drawing is my way of understanding both myself and the environment. Drawing to me means interpretation and abstraction. I focus on the tension between reality and fiction - the play of form and content as well as the force of expression of the line. I draw to think, to reflect, to observe and, finally, to react.

“In one sense the pencil becomes an immediate expression of my thoughts. It is also an interpretation of what I see and experience. Its analysis and synthesis.

“My illustrations represent one part of my work and show the abstract line I follow. However it is important to keep the naturalistic view and to get your vocabulary from observation. Every drawing is based on reality in so far as I don’t invent forms and contents from scratch but rather develop them from the things I experience. This way of thinking allows me to play with reality and that’s the attraction.“
