This week we welcome back Agnes Vas to the Fallyrag fold. We last saw Agnes present a wonderfully eclectic, rainbow display of graphic design work but it is something altogether more subtle that we look at today.
With this collection Agnes proves that she not only has the skills to visually communicate someone else's message, but also the wit and originality that must be present in an illustrator.
Agnes' illustrations ditch the very prominent colour wheel of her design work and instead favour the power of the line. Captured in these drawings is an immediacy - a scratchy, snapshot that hurries the viewer into an instant recognition. These drawings capture instantly familiar human emotions but those that are often concealed and which presented here cause an uncomfortable itch.
Agnes brings the twisted human sole to the fore with figures whose posture is uncomfortable, whose eyes wonder manically around the surface. The success in which she records these darting, discerning faces is measured by the familiarity of them. It takes only a moment to decipher the ambience of these works, which is what makes them so charming. You don't need to spend hours decoding them, breaking them down. They are as accessible as her design work and yet offer a personal touch - we are seeing through Agnes' eyes the dark side of the human condition.
Agnes is now part of the Brighton-based collective, Art For, which is exhibiting in August. Details on this event to follow.
