Imagination's Extensions

By age twelve I had developed quite a keen sense of self and a very vivid imagination, not to mention a strong hunch that I had cracked the Riemann hypothesis

Simon Corry

How do you see your style fitting into the wider artistic culture?

I'm not really sure I'm too bothered as to whether or not my style fits into the 'wider artistic culture' - I certainly haven't given it much thought. The work I produce is just an extension of my imagination, by creating I satisfy a certain yearning, which in the wider scheme of things is enough for me. It's also really nice to allow people the opportunity to experience the work and hopefully bring a smile.

How long have you been taking photographs?

I've been sketching since I was quite young, at first it was forced on me in the form of visual and technical drawing but shortly afterward I began to experiment with my own form of freehand illustration, which has ended up growing into the style I employ today.

Can you tell us a little bit about how you’ve developed your style?

My style was developed through religiously sticking to a routine of the following activities: playing on as many computer consoles and games as I can find (never underestimate the power of a good computer game, I'm 24 years old now and still swear by them!).

Drawing anytime, anywhere, regardless of prior commitments (or girlfriends) and it is essential to carry a sketchbook with you on your travels; you never know when that 'idea' is going to pop on in there!

These seemingly trivial activities form the backbone of my entire illustrative career and I would be lost without each and everyone.

Who have been the major influences and inspirations for your work and why?

I tend to gather ideas for my work from just about every conceivable place. I suppose looking back; the things that stick out are computer consoles/games - never underestimate the power of a good computer game, I'm 24 years old now and still swear by them - In fact I'd go so far as to say if your an illustrator their a must have!

Animation/cartoons - This probably stems back to my childhood and being sat every Saturday morning on the floor of my best mate's house watching 'Double Dragon' and 'Sonic the Hedgehog'. Later in my life I became a big fan of Japanese anime such as the 'Studio Ghibli' collection - 'Metropolis' and 'Ghost in a Shell'.

Do you ever do much in the way of collaboration?

I love to collaborate and tend to do it as often as possible and with as many people as possible. I'm currently putting together a book of the best collaborations. which will also form a one-off exhibition, exclusively at the Babahogs Art Cafe in Falmouth.

I recently set up the 'Boys Who Draw' collective. This is a bit of an illustrative mash-up dedicated to producing the very best in contemporary illustration for your general amusement. The official launch will be later this summer but for now join us on our blog to keep up to date: www.boyswhodraw.com.
