'I Haven't Held One Of These In Years'
Fallyrag

Daniel Williams is a Bournemouth-based illustrator, artist and flash animator.

The images on display here are a playful, stimulating collection of everyday situations. Such arresting works are formed largely by the lively expressions that Daniel creates - very real and familiar emotions cast in two-dimensional computer-based imagery. Coupled with their familiar surroundings this work is both engaging and comforting to the viewer.

But although these images may seem innocently executed, Daniel is playing with the lot of us! He told Fallyrag: “…there is that saying that people unknowingly copy the facial expression of the person they are talking to - So I produce some images in the hope people viewing them will re-enact the expression I have drawn.”

Daniel’s influences are more likely to come from the computer screen or a Sega-plugged TV than the National Gallery. A self-confessed geek, his love of computer games, technology and gadgets is clear to see in works that often demonstrate complex and thoughtful composition.

“I love the moment when they pick up the old school controller or joystick and mutter the words 'cor…I haven’t held one of these in years!’”

Artists rarely switch off from their profession and Daniel is no different: “Normally I will see something on TV or in town…or maybe a friend will say something mid-conversation unknowingly and it sparks an image or scenario in my head…which then gets doodled down in a sketchbook.”

Such doodles usually come laced with humour, whether it’s stereotypes of the bespectacled geeks or the topless broads enjoying what we can only assume is Bournemouth beach!

Daniel was kind enough to offer our readers some advice for the wave of graduates entering tough times in the creative industry.

“It is that old catch of how do you get experience with out having any in the first place? It really is all about self-promotion. I would advise anyone especially post graduates to get a web site together and some business cards or postcards, maybe some stickers and send them off to companies and businesses.”
