Fallyraggers, Spring is at last upon us and what better way to kick off the new season than with a look at the budding work of Harrison Weber.
Harrison is a graphic design student with a huge illustration influence on his work. Like the scrawling, scratchy lines of Quentin Blake, Harrison captures both literal likenesses and also personality in his charming floral images.
Working in ink and watercolour paints, this collection has an immediacy about it. This is coupled by a wonderful contrast of a colourful palette sliced by a high contrast of black ink.
The use of watercolour as a background tool encourages movement. The vertical stalks don't just seem to be applied by the artist, but shooting out of the ground. A huge skyward energy bursts from this images leaving splattering colour in it's wake.
Indeed many of these works have a great immediacy about them whilst others are more calculated and thoughtful. Harrison tells us about his approach...
'My process usually sits on both extremes: I either work very quickly and expressively, or I take a very long time to plan out a concept. The resulting message is usually optimistic, but the depth of the work usually depends on my goals. I am currently getting more and more involved in social causes and street installations, which leads me to spend more time on work that has extra substance. I do, however, love to produce work that just is. Something that's so direct that its refreshing.'
We can see a beautiful blend here of quick, illustrations that capture a moment and towards the end work that is both quirky and full of wit. Combining text and image can be a risky business but Harrison executes his last 3 images perfectly.
Much of Harrison's floral work as
demonstrated here is influenced by the great Stina Persson although Harrison takes us a little further back to when his preoccupation with watercolour and ink came from.
'I had a very passionate art teacher in high school that let me work on and use anything I'd ever need. So when I stumbled upon watercolour and then ink, she influenced me quite a bit in my style (her's being expressive and whimsical).'
