We welcome Nia Gould back for her third Fallyrag feature. In the past, we’ve taken a look at her exquisite typographic project Mummerset, which drew its inspiration from colloquial inflection and, more recently, a deeply psychological illustration set. This new selection of design-based images, taken from a number of projects, demonstrate Nia’s broad range of techniques and a very contemporary style.
The ‘Spotlight’ images are a fine example of how one combines classic fashion-style photos with purposeful marketing in mind. One, in which the girl covers her face, contrasts the black and white image, alongside the highly visible, pink-backed title text. The contrast is repeated in a similarly linear fashion, from top-to-bottom, with the arms contrasted by the garment and the effect is a subtle, feminised strength within the image.
Nia uses a similar use of colour in the Kat Marsh series however, there is a real pop-art technique at work with the repetition of the triangles, and coupled with the neo-retro get-up, a distinctly 1980s feel. The typographic image, though reminiscent of her Mummerset series, shows a new elegance in the technique – both in the presentation of the photography and the depicted type. Similarly, the presentation of her ‘National & Supplements’ image, show a talented control of focus within the frame.
It’s always a pleasure to see Nia’s work, her ability to retain some of the best elements of her design but not be overly-reliant on them, means there is always a fresh content to engage you.
