Fallyrag does some Q & A with Sam Hayles, the mastermind of DOSE Productions and hears his thoughts on creativity and some of his latest projects
In your last interview with us, you highlighted music and film as important inspirations for your work. To what extent do you feel these genres have a wider impact on the world of art & design?
I think art and media have an impact on each other - For example video games get inspiration from movies and movies get inspiration from video games - same for comics, music, design, art, painters, illustrators etc - they all feed on each other!
What do you think are the greatest problems facing young, creative people in this day and age?
One problem could be compared to the MySpace phenomenon! You get to find so many good bands and music on there and it’s the same thing with creative people - there are many good designers and illustrators. To be a graphic designer today - prepare yourself! Be aware that they are so many out there - You must be ready to work a lot! Be very motivated and make and work on your own personal style; that's the way to pop out.
Could you tell us a little more about your musical venture Toxikhate?
Toxikhate is a metal/industrial/hardcore band I set up with my best friend and guitarist/singer Daniel Rovira. I have always played in bands since I was a kid but these last few years all my energy and time went 100% into graphics and DOSEprod.
But last year my friend got himself a Mac and I started to feel the need to get back into music, so we thought that we could play again together, rehearse, start to learn some audio software and have some fun recording and making some noise! We did some demos and released our first single 'CON$UME' on our MySpace.
Then, the US music label FIXT (owned by Celldweller, whom I also work with doing designs) had a listen and liked it. He asked us to have Toxikhate as part of their on-line store. Some new tunes are nearly ready and please have a listen on our MySpace!
In your opinion, how would you define ‘creativity’?
Passion, belief, obsession, imagination, commitment, expressing yourself and your feelings.
