A Tale of Type

This month, our UK readers have received a multitude of election pamphlets through the post. As we all rather expected, it has been generally bland, sometimes garish and never a testament to the abundance of talented designers in Britain.

It would seem rash to claim that better visual aids to the 2010 campaigns would have generated more votes alone, but try telling that to David Ogilvy. The true potential of visual communication is rarely exposed during these events but the power of design cannot be underestimated. (For a quick lesson in graphic design please Google 'VW lemon campaign'.)

It is with some confidence then that we feel that having the talents of Paul Betowski on your side would have ensured more votes and would generally have made everyone's doormats look a little more interesting.

Paul graduated from University College Falmouth in 2008. On selection, here is a variety of Paul's work that demonstrates a high level of visual awareness and perfect execution. Whether it be poster design or typographic work, each piece bear’s the mark of a striking, thoughtful design that has become Paul's trademark.

The work on show here gives a great impression of confident, bold design. Comfortable working with type and iconography; Paul blends variations of large text that creates the visual draw to his work.

Serif fonts are juxtaposed with sans serif counterparts, which means that text doesn't just serve a purpose of being read but also adds to the visual appeal of his work. This itself is an art. Combining two, let alone several, typefaces in a single piece requires a careful appreciation of their visual properties. Treatment must be sensitive to conflicting straight and curved lines and this is something Paul achieves aptly.

If any of the political parties had taken on the talent of Paul then perhaps a few of us may have actually read the flyers that have been pouring through our letterboxes.

Paul is currently serving an internship at http://www.a-sidestudio.co.uk/
