The Sub-conscious Art of Nia Gould
Fallyrag

Many moons ago, when Fallyrag was a mere fledgling internet page with a couple of links, we featured a graphic designer named Nia Gould. South-West through-and-through Nia studied in Falmouth at the University College. Since this time, however, she has blossomed as an artist and we are very pleased to offer her latest selection for you here.

We often ask the artists we feature what the inspirations are behind their work. Nia, however, has no linear illusion to her art. Her self-professed “sub-conscious art” climbs organically round the page; leaving only traces and impressions of her graphics.

“I literally felt an urge to start creating work of my own and I took a large canvas and just went with it. No ideas or direction; I just let my imagination come up with what you see here. It started with no real purpose and now I cant seem to stop wanting to create more and more.”

Her last Fallyrag feature, entitled ‘Mummerset’, examined,  through graphic design, the colloquial twang of the South-West in a very even-handed manner. But sub-conscious art is the bubbling of old and new forms; in these you can see how the impressions of old have been laced into the more fluid and curvaceous lines of the new - How a dream can spark a movement.

“The 'Mummerset' symbols feature in some of the drawings in order to represent language and, well, me - I speak a bit funny sometimes! I also have a lot of other little personal symbols in there like the rainclouds and, sometimes, my dreams can influence what I start to draw.”

Nia has an up-coming exhibition at the ‘The Bookcycle Warehouse’ just off the Exeter Quay in July. For more details on the exhibition and to see more of Nia’s artwork please check out her website here.
