Who have been the major influences/inspirations on you and why?
Mr Holnes, my art teacher at comprehensive school. He was the first to recognize my 'painterly painting' and introduced me to the painting of Rembrandt. Carole Vincent who has supported me donated paints, paper etc.. I first met her in 1992 when I completed a Foundation in Art and Design; she is a tutor, friend and colleague.
What’s your favourite environment in which to work?
I like working outside but sometimes the studio is just as welcoming. Anywhere there is paint!
What are the overall themes and messages you try to incorporate in your work?
"We are all part of the whole." and LOOK At that light! FEEL that landscape!
What other mediums do you like using?
I like to have a go with most mediums but I love charcoal, oilpaint, watercolour and acrylics. I have also been investigating printing a lot over the last 12 months and love monoprinting too.
Have you exhibited any work? Where and when?
With the Boscastle group I have taken part in a lot of exhibitions, after we all got together, meeting through Carole, we exhibit at her home and studio once or twice a year. Since about 1995 we have exhibited together at The Mariners Gallery, St Ives, in the crypt - lots of history there. We did that for a few years and then started to exhibit at John Blights Camelford Gallery, we have also exhibited at the China Clay museum in St Austell.
I myself have had 2 shows, both held at
John’s Camelford Gallery, these were in 2006 and 2008.
What challenges you?
It’s all a challenge otherwise there wouldn't be any point!
What do you think are the major difficulties facing young artists today and why?
Content, because a lot has gone before.
If you could exhibit anywhere in the world where would it be?
London and Berlin
In your opinion, what do you think it means ‘to be creative’?
I think everyone is creative. I also think that it involves honesty, the use of intellectual and practical skills to be, or do, the best you can. My favorite quote relating to this, although I’ve forgotten where it came from, is "Genius is seldom diminished by accuracy."
