Printed Suspense

Martin Ridgwell’s prints are not only expertly executed in their medium, they also demonstrate an incredible illustrative skill.

The series presented here is an ongoing work that depicts the relationship between two men who have been friends since childhood. However, this relationship is explored subtly through the intimate situations in which they find themselves.

The series continues to flirt with an erotic sense of male sex and strength. Deer antlers play with the dangerous idea of territorial combat whilst alluding to sexual tension.

There are also scenes of half dressed torsos juxtaposed with innocent childhood toys. With every piece there is an overriding air of suspense and a feeling that we have just walked in on something - as if interrupting a conversation or chancing upon a secret rendezvous.

One thing that can’t be avoided in Martin’s work is his sheer attention to detail. Every print is painstakingly composed presenting a rewarding visual for the viewer. His confidence of handling light is also strongly apparent and guides his audience to different areas of his work with an expert hand.

Martin’s humorous observations, such as making shadow puppets on the wall, coupled with his talented draughtsmanship make each piece not just a picture, but an experience within itself. We are given a privileged glance through a window into the parallel lives of two men and are all the better for it!
