The medium of glass is vibrant and expressive. Innovations in the artistic method of glass casting have risen substantially in the UK, over the last 40 years. Glass is proving to be an exciting medium within the field of Contemporary craft and Carli Anne Warner is an emerging artist who specializes in the field.
Carli’s work responds to man-made structural designs such as bridges and steps. It’s not only the aesthetic qualities of these structures that she’s interested in, it’s also the function and the routes of travel that they enable. She creates angular wedge shaped sculptures that play with the idea of transition through form and direction.
“The systematic process of glass casting is lengthy and demands a serious commitment from the artist.” Carli told Fallyrag. The staggered process allows her to reflect on the work many times before the piece is finished.
Carli is fascinated with the scientific properties of glass as a material; the fourth state of matter. The qualities of glass are vital for Carli’s work as it’s these properties that she finds inspiring. Her work wouldn’t have the same representation in any other medium.
She chooses to work with coloured transparent glass which responds to the original inspiration. She manipulates the qualities of glass by combining hand polished surfaces, matt surfaces and textured surfaces.
