This week Fallyrag has the privilege and pleasure to feature Cos Ahmet - a London-based fine artist. Here we have a beautiful selection of works from his latest solo exhibition 'Bodylogues'.
Bodylogues is a collection of work that concentrates on the abstract human form. Much of this work is a complexity of personal encounters, self portraiture and sexuality that takes a novel approach to self expression.
The real draw to Cos' work is its sheer complexity. Here we have an artist who possesses that rare blend of masterly aesthetic awareness twinned with a deep sense of honest reflection. Firstly, they are stunning. Rich deep blues burst through a foreground of woven fabric that conceals the human form and then brings it alive. Silhouetted figures add a sense secrecy. We don't really know the true identity of the sitter yet with this comes the possibility that it could be you. For although these are, in a sense, self-portraits, ignoring recognisable facial features, they bring a celebrated tinge of unity.
The ragged, torn fabric could represent the very garments that we all wear to hide or protect our own modesty. Cos appears to be commenting on this very behaviour by ruthlessly tearing it all apart. In some pictures two figures stand side by side united by a single piece of fabric that has been placed on both - a smart reminder of fashion and subculture chic to which we all fall victim.
One constant theme in these works is that of sexuality. Some images explicitly show genitals bursting out of the picture while there is a constant aura of sexuality created by what is shown and, more importantly, what is not. There is an erotic quality to the notion of exposure and anonymity that is more apparent the longer you take to peel back the layers of Cos' works.
